Brushes in XFL with Platinum Real Jazz Groove Pack
Hello,
today I got my XFL Expansion Pack and tried it with the Real Jazz Midi Groove Pack.
Unfortunately the brushes in the Grooves don't work like in the audio samples on Platinum homepage. They don't SWEEP as expected!
Instead they use the DRAG articulation and this sounds more jumping than sweeping...
How can I get real sweeping brushes?
Thanks,
Rainer

Hi Rainer,
I doesn't look like any of the brush snares in XFL have a sweep articulation... Jazz & Funk use the Drag articulation for the sweeps... Jim Scott's pack has a "Sweep" articulation which is supported in BFD 2.1
Regards,
Rail

Thanks Rail,
but I think you're missing something - some snares, for example the PorkPie Snare1b, very well HAVE sweep articulations!
(Find it under Rim and SS articulation)
But as I wrote the Real Jazz Grooves use the DRAG articulation and therefore the nice sweeping brush grooves are degraded...
Regards,
Rainer

Hi Rainer,
Let me reinstall XFL here and see what I can come up with to make it work for you. I have the flu so I'm moving slower than usual today...
Cheers,
Rail

That's fine! Hope you can crack it.
As I said there ARE sweep articulations - only the grooves seem to be misplaced (mapping).
But relax! First take care of yourself with your flu...

I have an email into FXP to see if they have any suggestions on adjusting the artics in the palette.
Thanks,
Rail

With XFL the drags, when they are present are in different articulations and have a much different texture. You could use the GM version of the Real Jazz collection and make a quick note map change to catch the sweeps. JNF was the first pack to really go after a proper brush sound and keep them all within the drag slot. The Jim Scott pack also works well. Being that the sweep is so important to brush playing we used those two packs to check all of the grooves. Keep in mind that the sound of the drag needs to be right. Playing brushes is an artform and the results from the Real Jazz pack came out great. Those demos on the webpage use JNF and Jim Scott packs.
Cheers,
John

Right,
As John mentioned - after consulting with the programmers - it seems the easiest solution would be to create a new Keymap and map the sweep MIDI note to the snare Rim artic for the XFL pack.. then import the GM MIDI as new palettes... but the XFL sweeps may not work as well as the JNF and JSD sweeps.

Thanks a lot!
Unfortunately I'm not able to buy another expansion pack like JNF right now... so I would be very happy if it works with XFL.
I'll give it a try.
Greetings,
Rainer

You can also look into the Modern Drummer snare pack and the downloadable signature snares. The brush drums in those packs are set up the same way as JNF, but are less than $90.
In Real Jazz, as well as real jazz drumming the brush snare needs to be right to work.

Hey John,
do you mean the Signature Snares Vol.1 for $70?
That would be a possibility... I'll think about it.
And the brushes will sweep right if I load such a snare in a kit piece slot instead of the original kit snare???
You're shure?
Thanks,
Rainer
