time signature, meter

Postby Zapf » Sun Jul 31, 2011 10:06 pm

It seems Geist doesn't support time signatures other than 4/4 in song mode.

You can't enter meter changes in song mode... and when Geist's song mode is locked to the host, if the host has meter changes, Geist falls out of step with it.

Just looking for confirmation... there's nothing about this in the manual or that I can search up on the forum.

This is pretty accurate. Geist is a step sequencer and as such doesn't really have a concept of bars or time signatures. It should be fairly straight forward to do it manually however, just make sure your patterns have the correct lengths that correspond to your time signature.

Support for time sigs is on our feature requests list, but cannot say when/if it will happen.

It would be really useful if the pattern could have a different look when going for a different time signature.
Offcourse you have to choose the desired steps, but see how Numerology handles this in a clever way by changing the look of the grid.

mmm... interesting. But it might make things more complicated too. What about when you want to use a three beat pattern in a 4/4 context? Say, trigger a three beat drum-fill on beat 2 of a 4/4 song; or when you have multiple beat length patterns running against each other? So, you may not want a three beat pattern to define 3/4 time.

I think that allowing song mode to support the time sig changes would work best... but perhaps you are talking about song mode and not pattern mode... in that case, it seems like a plus all the way around.

When this is applied to each pattern individualy, you could do the drumfill on a different pattern. Thats how I always do it.

PH... it seems that you have an idea for a method that would work for you. But if a pattern length defining the time signature in a song was the default function, it would impose a workflow that might be limiting for a lot of other people. For instance, you wouldn't be able to have two different pattern lengths running against each other at the same time.

I think you totaly misunderstand me here...
You will still be able to set the amount of steps, just as it is now.
The signature aid is purely visual.
If you are on mac, check out Numerology to see what I'm talking about.

Here you see triplet signatures with different step length...

Sorry. I suspect that I am missing something.

I just spent some time looking over Numerology on the website...it looks amazing...though I can hardly wrap my head around it in a few minutes.

What about just using Numerology to control Geist's sounds? -that doesn't discount your original suggestion... but Numerology looks like it outdoes Geist on the sequencing side of things.

Offcourse you can use Numerology to control geist, but you mis the graph automation.
You still don't understand the way Numerology handles the view of the grid by dividing it into the chosen signatures ? And still being able to chose the number of steps ?
This feature could be very useful for geists patterns. It should be pattern related though...please fxpansion guys, take this in consideration !

Guys,

Have you tried adjusting the pattern shading mode in the preferences to see if it gives you what you want?

Okay,
I see it only adapts when choosing 16T or any other triplets.
But I have this project in 6/4th 94 bpm , changing it to 16T or 32T, I can't get it to match the tempo.
I'm talking about having it in normal 16/32th with 24/48 steps, but visually having a triplet shade underneath.

I think its a good request, but don't see it getting into Geist v1.0 due to how the graphic rendering works. I'll put it into our tracker as a feature request.
