BFD2 presets sound different in BFD3 [BR:12219]

Postby assagai » Sat Nov 15, 2014 6:51 pm

.. for example, loading the "back to the 70's" bfd preset in bfd3 - The preset is not the same, ambient and room mics are up in BFD3 but not in BFD2.

Or the BlingDubbly Kit - the mix is definitely not the same, even the panning is reversed when loading the preset in bfd3.

Is there a reason for this?

here's the same preset loaded into bfd2 & 3.

BFD2: http://cl.ly/0f1A423m1O1p/bling%20bfd2.wav

BFD3: http://cl.ly/1a2C1y0Y3p41/bling%20bfd3.wav

The mix/panning are different between the two versions.

I think the BlingDubbly preset is a stock standard bfd2 preset?

Same with Back To The Seventies.

well here's more "air" because the amb/room mics are turned up in the BFD3 version, the original mix from BFD2 is a drier sound. I can match them by adjusting levels in the bfd3 mixer and vice versa, so I think the drums sound identical when the mixes are matched - but the mixes aren't moving across to bfd3 when loading bfd2 presets, for some reason.

This makes it tricky to swap bfd3 for bfd2 in older projects or swapping presets between users of bfd2/3

The main difference is the level of the oh/amb/room mics. In some cases I've noticed that panning of certain elements is reversed.

Yes the levels LOOK the same in the mixer, but if you pull them down (in bfd3) you get much closer to the original bfd2 preset.

Contacted support about this but no reply since a week - is this normal FXpansion support speed?

I've always had good luck. I usually end up writing them on Saturday morning Stateside though and wake up Monday to an answer. Perhaps they're investigating so they can give you a better answer?

Any update on this?

Using bfd2 packs in bfd3 often results in the presets not sounding the same, or as intended in the original preset.

Same goes for user patches created in BFD2.

Any plans to address this?

Join us. Loaded in BFD3 presets from BFD2 sound wrong. We have to re-configure the microphones installation environment of each element - they all have the maximum level regardless of the position of the slider. And without changing the level of the microphone (eg AMB) is sufficient to shift the level of the right and left, and setting, as in the preset microphone level resets to normal limits. That's the same with the third-party libraries - XFL, Chocolate Drums, Yamaha Oak Custom, etc.

I've already noted the ambient issue and logged a bug. You'll also find in some cases the ambient channel is properly set visually, but the ambience is incorrect. Workaround for this is to click on each ambient channel resets the ambient volumes and re-save them as a BFD3 preset.

I've also found more issues between BFD2 and BFD3 presets... stayed tuned.

Exactly the same issue here with 3.0.4 and 3.0.5

Load any BFD2 preset in BFD3, and all the Room/OH/Amb3 channels play back at maximum volume, regardless of volume setting displayed in GUI.

Most blindingly obvious in 'classic mono room' where all kit pieces have volume for OH and Amb3 set to -infinity (but not off), and yet all kit pieces are playing loudly in the OH and Amb3 channels.

Tried to raise a support ticket on this but it won't let you do this unless you have downloaded the 'latest version', which evidently includes public betas. (There is a certain logic to this, I suppose; but I'm not sure forcing users to download a beta, or forfeit the ability to raise a support ticket, is really fair.)

There's already a Mantis number filed against it. They're working on it, so filing a support ticket would be moot at this point.
