OS update Big Sur & BFD3

Postby iliealing » Fri Sep 25, 2020 10:22 am

Does anybody know if they work together? Will we have another diaster like last year, when BFD3 didn't work for months with the Catalina update?? Can FXpansion already shed some light on this?

Why not hold off updating to SUR until FXpansion release an official statement.

Is SUR really that good that you can't wait?

Last time with the Catalina update we had to wait for many many months. Way too long. Communication about the progression of the update also sucked, some people were stuck with non-working plugin (even freshly purchased with the promise of a quick update) to the point that many were looking for alternative drumplugs. There was even a worry about end of software support. Too much problems en worry for something FXpansion can anticipate easily.

Is it the case though that with apple upgrades you are forced to update or do you have a choice?
If you do have a choice then I'd stick with what works.

I have read plenty about the lack of support and peoples fears about the demise of BFD and totally understand why people have felt that way.

Drew_FX has posted recently on this subject and without wanting to say too much I would say the BFD team are hugely relived to be free of Roli and all the early signs of their new partnership with in-music are very positive for the future development of BFD and they're now free to start work on BFD4.

Hopefully it will speed up the bug fix and update process too so perhaps you won't need to wait as long as last time.

Steve

I don't work for fxpansion by they way.

This is a very legitimate question. While holding off the upgrade is a potential workaround for some users, FXpansion not responding to the question is not acceptable, especially in light of the Catalina debacle.

Not only some of us will buy new hardware with Big Sur, postponing an upgrade is at best a major nuisance - not all of us are professional studios with iMacs dedicated only to music production. Occasionally, one may upgrade accidentally (my ex-wife once upgraded the machine unbeknownst to me), and more over, in the case of Catalina, most other vendors - certainly all that mattered to me - were ready months before FXpansion.

I chose to wait for several extra months on account of one straggler. Ultimately, I bought SD3 when, ideally, I shouldn't really have had this expense.

I'm holding off for a while, as ProTools and some other software have not yet announced compatibility. For the time being, I can wait.

I sent an email to support at bfddrums dot com last week asking if they had a timeline, but I never got a response of any kind.

BFD3 works fine, even on the new macs with M1 chip, according to this video:

Can anybody confirm this? or even better can FXpansion comfort this?
Anyway level of support for BFD3 is tragically minimalistic either practically unavailable as expected. Due to this I will be looking for an alternative drummachine plugin coming months. Already tried AD en Toontrack but not to my liking, I'm open to suggestions.

If AD2 and Superior Drummer 3 aren't to your liking you won't find anything better.
SD3 is really the only equivalent to BFD3 as AD2 is a way behind in terms of sound quality and features.

Outside of libraries for kontakt there really isn't anything close to that kind of quality.
Be interested to hear what you find.
